A long time favorite restaurant in Carmel Valley is getting some much needed help. The founder of media company Barstool Sports, Dave Portnoy, has raised more than $26M for more than 130 small businesses and now Wagon Wheel Coffee Shop. The owner of the restaurant in Carmel Valley, Taresa Blair, said there are not enough words to describe how thankful she is for the money.Blair found out Barstool Sports offered small businesses money to help them stay afloat. Within an hour of applying for funds, the owner said she received a response. Blair said a few days later Wagon Wheel had the money to pay for its monthly rent. Blair said she not only covered for this month, but Barstool Sports will continue to help her for as long as she needs, or until they run out of funds. Wagon Wheel is one of Carmel Valley's staples, having been around for more than 50 years as a popular breakfast spot. Blair said with indoor and outdoor dining banned, the generous donation is much needed to help with their struggles. "It definitely lightens the load. I am not making money at my business, but I'm able to keep some of my employees on staff. And with this help, I can pay the rent and not worry that I have my electricity, the gas and phone, insurance, everything," Blair said. "It's just nice to know that there's still people out there willing to help others that they don't even know. And just the kindness of their heart, just to put it out there," she said.Portnoy started the Barstool Fund initiative in December to help small businesses across the country.
