In the early morning hours on Friday, December 5th while on routine patrol, Galesburg Police observed a black SUV sitting in the middle of the East Main and Chestnut Street four-lane intersection. According to police reports, the male driver was asleep behind the wheel of the running vehicle which turned out to be a rental. While officers prepared to make a traffic stop, the SUV inched forward rolling across the four lanes hitting a curb, and coming to a stop near the entrance to Hy Vee. Officers made contact with the driver: 31-year old Tearyll Shunick of Galesburg and had him exit the vehicle. Officers asked Shunick a series of questions to which he wouldn’t reply. After refusing to perform a field sobriety test, and a strong odor of alcohol and cannabis, officers placed him under arrest. A search of his person turned up a baggie of cannabis, and a search of the vehicle turned up a duffel bag containing bundles of cash totaling over $46,000 and cannabis seeds. After being transported to the Public Safety Building, Shunick became more irate constantly attempting to intimidate officers and even exposing himself at one point. Shunick was charged with Driving Under the Influence, Driving on a Revoked License, Aggravated DUI, Possession of Cannabis in a Motor Vehicle, and Resisting a Peace Officer.
