CAMBRIA TOWNSHIP — A Jackson County man was airlifted from the scene of a crash early Sunday morning after falling asleep at the wheel.
The Michigan State Police Jackson Post and other first responders were dispatched around 5:41 a.m. to Bankers Road near Carpenter Road for the single vehicle crash.
Police said a preliminary investigation revealed the driver of a red Hummer, a 44-year-old man from Jackson County, was eastbound on Bankers Road when he fell asleep at the wheel.
The Hummer exited the roadway, went through a ditch and rolled onto the driver side and slid into a telephone pole.
The man was trapped inside his vehicle and had to be extricated by the Hillsdale Township and Reading Community fire departments, police said.
The man was airlifted by Survival Flight to Henry Ford Allegiance Health Center in Jackson due to serious injuries sustained in the crash, police said, and he is expected to survive.
Alcohol nor drugs are suspected as contributing factors to the crash, police said.
