The first book in the Wheel of Time series, The Eye of the World, was released in 1990, predating Martin's first novel in the Song of Fire and Ice series, Game of Thrones. The novel introduced readers to the young hero Rand, the son of a sheep farmer who discovers he is the Chosen One known as the Dragon and must defeat an evil entity called the Dark One in a battle that will determine the fate of the world. Robert Jordan explored the typical tropes of classic fantasy -- a grand evil army, a Chosen One with the balance of the world in his hands and a dark villain -- but wanted to write characters with realistic reactions to these concept. He wanted his series to focus on the small people who lived within this world and have to deal with the consequences of the forces attempting to shape and control everything around them. Jordan focused on the idea of good versus evil, complete with archetypes of the hero's journey.
Conversely, George R.R. Martin wrote A Song of Ice and Fire to be anti-fantasy, with his initial concepts of the series intended to pull against the typical tropes and ideas, instead focusing on a story that contained some fantasy elements but none of the commonly predictable story structures of the genre. The magic in his books took a backseat to the political intrigue and machinations of the families vying for the Iron Throne, and he was willing to kill off key characters in shocking moments where they would have survived and thrived in any other fantasy work. Despite his determination to focus on a dark grim fantasy, Martin was deeply inspired by Jordan's work, and at the time of Jordan's death wrote that "his ambitious Wheel of Time series helped redefine the genre and opened many doors for the writers who followed."
With numerous fantasy adaptations in the works, and with Game of Thrones' mixed reception ending, streaming services are trying hard to capitalize on the fantasy genre to develop the next big thing. The Wheel of Time is not as dark as Game of Thrones: it has a bigger world with a truly complex magic system, it contains fantasy elements that many viewers are familiar with and unlike A Series of Ice and Fire, The Wheel of Time series finished with an ending that fans of the novels universally loved. Game of Thrones proved that audiences want more fantasy, but with its highly divisive ending, fans were repelled from the genre. With it's huge cast of characters and epic story that spans multiple novels, Wheel of Time could very well be the next big thing that shakes up the fantasy genre.
Executive produced and written by Rafe Judkins, The Wheel of Time stars Rosamund Pike, Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, Zoë Robins, Barney Harris, Madeleine Madden, Daniel Henney, and Michael McElhatton. A premiere date has not been announced by Amazon at this time.
