Wheel of Fortune is here to remind contestants that “declaring victory” too early has serious consequences. On Monday’s episode, a contestant got considerably out over his skis when he flubbed his final guess for the aptly-themed phrase “Declaring Victory.” As longtime Wheel of Fortune fans know, those contractions will get you!
Throughout last night’s game, Alex Lisenko held a commanding lead over his fellow contestants, and he headed into the final group puzzle with $6,000. The two-word phrase included 16 letters, and the trio slowly filled them in until only five remained. When Alex guessed “Y,” he smiled knowingly at host Pat Sajak, who laughed at his Wheel of Fortune prowess.
“I’m declaring victory!” said Alex, raising his arms Rocky style.
However, his luck quickly ran out. Alex quickly realized that he had accidentally added the word “I’m” before providing his answer, thereby committing a cardinal Wheel of Fortune sin. His face fell as the show’s incorrect answer buzzer rang out, and a few seconds later, another contestant, Amanda Hamchuk, chimed in with the correct, contraction-free guess. “Yeah, that’s it,” replied Sajak. “There you go.”
As viewers at home were quick to point out, adding extra words to a guess is a big no-no. “Another classic Wheel of Fortune L,” wrote one fan. “My face when he said ‘I’m declaring victory,'” wrote another alongside the classic Michael Scott cringing GIF. “You totally crapped that guy out of the money for not allowing him to win,” added another (particularly frustrated) viewer. “That is a bad look for you. We are very disappointed in your show.”
While embarrassing, Alex’s flub didn’t end up costing him the game (but he did lose $7,500). He ultimately won the group portion of the episode and headed into the bonus round with $32,820 cash. However, he wasn’t able to solve the final puzzle, causing him to lose out on a new Jeep Compass Latitude.
