Big engines aren't long for this world. New laws and regulations are pushing manufacturers to downsize and electrify. Mercedes seems to want to hold on to the V-12 as long as possible, though, as it's just introduced a new 12-cylinder Maybach S-Class. And for the first time, it sends power to all four wheels.

The 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S 680 is the latest entry into the new S-Class lineup, positioned as the most expensive, most luxurious trim available. It shares the vast majority of its features and design with the V-8-powered Mercedes-Maybach S 580, meaning it packs every piece of new Mercedes tech imaginable inside. There are Maybach-specific bumpers, a rear-wheel steering system, the latest version of MBUX infotainment, and even the company's funky new rear-seat airbags. Massaging seats, champagne flutes, a Burmester sound system, you name it. The Maybach S-Class has it all.

The biggest change, of course, lies under the hood. In the S 680 you'll find Mercedes's tried and true 6.0-liter biturbo V-12 making the same 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque as it did in the last-gen 12-cylinder Mabyach. This engine's lineage can be traced all the way back to the late Nineties, where its ancestor was first introduced in the W220-era S 600. It's come a long way, of course, with the vast majority of parts seeing major upgrades to improve on performance and emissions over the years.

The massive motor sends power through a nine-speed automatic to a newly developed 4Matic system—a first for a V-12 powered S-Class. Mercedes says the torque split is 31-percent front and 69-percent rear, which it claims delivers the "highest level of ride comfort and driving dynamics." Mercedes claims a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph.

The 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S 680 is expected to reach U.S. dealerships in the first half of 2022. Pricing has yet to be released, though we expect to be a bit more expensive than the outgoing model, which had a starting MSRP of $198,500.
