See what a Trolloc looks like in Amazon’s The Wheel of Time show - Winter is Coming

The Wheel of Time has been playing a top-tier game on social media, releasing little micro-teasers that whet fans’ appetites for Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of Robert Jordan’s landmark fantasy series. Back in March, Amazon released a short clip giving fans their first look at Rosamund Pike as Aes Sedai sorceress Moiraine. It was just a few seconds long, but it made quite the impression:

And now, another account has made an even bigger impression…although they probably weren’t supposed to. The German account for Amazon Prime Video, @PrimeVideoDE, posted a now-deleted version of the scene that includes an additional shot where we see more of Moiraine’s outfit, among other things. Take a look:

As a member of the Blue Ajah, it’s no surprise that Moiraine is dressed all in blue. Some fans think that the “business casual” look seems a little too modern for the fantasy setting, but that’s one of the interesting things about The Wheel of Time.

While a lot of fantasy is set in a vaguely medieval period, Jordan’s epic takes place in a world more similar to 17th century Europe. And that comes straight from the author himself:

I thought The Wheel of Time was going to be five or six books. I didn’t think they’d be this long. I was doing this like a historical novel, but I had more things to explain, things not readily apparent. In a normal historical novel, you can simply let some things go by because the reader of historical fiction knows these, or has the concept of them. But this is not the medieval period, not a fantasy with knights in shining armor. If you want to imagine what the period is, imagine it as the late 17th century without gunpowder. I had to do more explaining about cultural details, and that meant things got bigger than I had intended.

Costumes play a huge role in fantasy, and The Wheel of Time is no exception. They add to the authenticity of an otherwise unfamiliar world. Moiraine may not be wearing the classic sky-blue cloak in that new video, but her outfit is still reflects the period the story takes its inspiration from:

There’s another detail: if you look closely behind Moiraine, you can see what appears to be Lan (Daniel Henney) fighting a Trolloc in the background:

Trollocs make the bulk of the evil army in this fantasy series. They’re horrific, humanoid creatures with the physical features of both animals and humans. In the books, they can have snouts or beaks, walk on legs or goat hooves, or even have feathers. The Trolloc in this teaser appears to have a hulking body and a ferocious ram’s head.

This deleted tweet had one more thing sure to please fans waiting to watch this series: the caption. “#TheWheelOfTime, the new Amazon Original series, will be available soon on Prime Video.”
