New Bedford makes its debut on a 'Wheel of Fortune' puzzle - SouthCoastToday.com

NEW BEDFORD – “I’d like to solve the puzzle… New Bedford, Massachusetts.” On Tuesday night, New Bedford made its grand debut on “Wheel of Fortune.” This may have been a first for the Whaling City but not for Massachusetts.

Now in its 38th season, “Wheel of Fortune” has been on the air since January 1975. In September 2020, host Pat Sajak became the longest-running host of any game show, surpassing Bob Barker who hosted “The Price is Right” from 1972 through 2007.

Sajak’s co-host, Vanna White was also inducted in the Guinness Book of World Records for clapping the most on “Wheel of Fortune.”

The concept is easy: spin-the-wheel and guess a letter.

“Massachusetts” has appeared numerous times on the puzzle wall throughout the game show's 7,000 episodes. The first time was on August 21, 1985 for the answer: “Cape Cod, Massachusetts.” A decade later, in Season 14, “Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts” was another answer.

Around Halloween, “Salem, Massachusetts” is a frequent puzzle answer – the most recent on October 21, 2020.

Last night’s NB-inspired puzzle was part of the game’s overall theme, “Inns of New England.” The winner of the “prize puzzle” won a trip to Cape Cod at the Lighthouse Inn.

In 2019, “Wheel of Fortune” introduced a bonus round called, “Triple Toss-Up” which gives contestants the opportunity to pick up $2,000 per quick-puzzle. “New Bedford, Massachusetts” was the first puzzle part of the Triple Toss-Up during Tuesday night’s game.

New Bedford’s Mayor Jon Mitchell tweeted: “And I thought @Jeopardy was the only game show that worked us into its answers” with a photo of the “Wheel of Fortune” answer on his television.

Even though New Bedford only just made its puzzle wall-debut, “Wheel of Fortune” featured “Call Me Ishmael” as a trivia puzzle in 1995 and “Moby Dick By Herman Melville” in 2004.

Here’s all the times Massachusetts has been an answer on the show according to a “Wheel of Fortune” archive called BuyAVowel.net:
