HURON — Wheel Jam is back!
After being pulled over for the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the annual event for all things with wheels returns Thursday through Sunday, with a wide array of things to see and do, many of them free of charge, and nearly all of them on the S.D. State Fairgrounds.
Events begin on Thursday, June 3, when registration opens at noon for the Wheel Jam Truck Show’s ‘Show-n-Shine and will be capped off by the return of stock car racing at 7 p.m. with the WISSOTA Challenge, at Dakota State Fair Speedway.
Things rev up on Friday, with the annual Candy Weinreis Memorial Poker Run, with registration taking place at the Red Arrow Bar, beginning at 5 p.m., followed by the ride.
The F.A.T. Friday Chili Challenge will take place beginning at 5:30 and the evening continues with “Jam Fest” featuring Avenger Joe at the Freedom Stage, beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets for Avenger Joe are $5 and the evening wraps up with “Rock n Lights” on West Machinery Ave., as Wheel Jam participants will show off the lights on their vehicles, to the sounds of classic rock and trucker tunes.
Registration for the classic car and motorcycle Show-N-Shine begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday and the 2021 Wheel Jam Parade through Huron swings into action at 10:30.
The Engine Brake Competition will take place at 11 a.m., on 2nd and Nevada and the Midwest SPL Progressive Sound Competition is set to run from noon until 5 p.m. in the Hippodrome.
The Dynamic Engine Brake Competition is set for 1 p.m., and the Biker Games and Motorcycle Burnout Competition begins at 6 p.m.
Action returns to the Dakota State Fair oval at 7 p.m. with the WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Cup and doors open for the second night of “Jam Fest” at 8:30, with Urbandale Lane taking the Freedom Stage. Tickets for Urbandale Lane are $7 and both concerts may move indoors to the Nordby Exhibit Hall, in case of inclement weather.
Amongst all the happenings on Saturday, don’t forget about the S.D. BBQ Championships and Backyard BBQ People’s Choice events.
Wheel Jam wraps up on Sunday, with a pancake feed beginning at 7 a.m. in the Women’s Building and presented by the Christian Motorcyclists Association.
At 12:30 p.m. registration for the Kids Pedal Pull competition opens, followed by the Bike and Trike Parade, the Pedal Pull and the presentation of the 2021 Wheel Jam Awards.
