Asleep at the Wheel comes to Starlight Ranch - Amarillo.com

Asleep at the Wheel makes its way back to Amarillo on Saturday, June 5, at the Starlight Ranch Event Center, 1415 Sunrise Drive.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. This will be an outdoor show with limited capacity.

Asleep at the Wheel started when Ray Benson, Floyd Domino, and Lucky Oceans, along with a Vermont farm boy named Leroy Preston, Virginian Chris O'Connell, and Gene Dobkin, a bass player and fellow classmate of Benson's from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, joined forces.

They began with a simple goal: to play and help revive American roots music.

"The musicianship of Asleep at the Wheel has become the stuff of legends," the group's website reads.

Taking a page from Bob Wills’ book, the band has constantly toured at a national level throughout its history with anywhere from seven to 15 of the finest players Benson could talk into jumping in the bus to play a string of dates.

The alumni roster is well more than 80 members, and includes an impressive list of musicians who have gone on to perform with artists such as Bob Dylan, George Strait, Van Morrison, Lyle Lovett, Ryan Adams, and many more, the group's website states.

Over its history, Asleep at The Wheel has garnered 10 GRAMMY Awards and released more than 25 studio and live albums, and there is no sign of slowing down.

The group is commemorating its 50th year with a new, three-song EP, "Better Times."

Bandleader and founding member Benson takes the lead vocal on the title track, a hopeful original written while riding out the pandemic.

Katie Shore sings “All I’m Asking,” a rousing request to get back together, written by Band of Heathens’ Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist.

Meanwhile, Benson and Shore harmonize on “Columbus Stockade Blues,” a traditional tune arranged in the spirit of Willie Nelson and Shirley Collie’s 1960s version.

Benson produced the EP for Bismeaux Records.
