The 2022 Chevy Camaro will offer one less wheel option, GM Authority has learned.
The the one 20-inch wheel option being discontinued on the Camaro actually is dubbed Caliente. That one wheel design breaks out into two wheel packages with RPO codes 5K9 and 57V.
5K9 is a 20×8.5 used for square setups on the LT trim while 57V is a 29×8.5 front and 20×9.5 rear used for staggered setups on SS models.
If these wheels look familiar, it’s because they have the same general design of the gorgeous wheels used on the Camaro Hot Wheels Edition, but without the silver trim on the wider end of the spokes.
Additionally, these 20-inch Caliente wheels received a price drop last year, making them more affordable at $400 per wheel.
This discontinuation of the wheels comes as Camaro sales continue to slump as the model heads toward discontinuation.
Sales Numbers - Two-Door Muscle Cars - Q1 2021 - USA
MODEL | Q1 21 / Q1 20 | Q1 21 | Q1 20 | Q1 21 SHARE | Q1 20 SHARE |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
FORD MUSTANG | -4.40% | 17,274 | 18,069 | 44% | 48% |
DODGE CHALLENGER | +24.37% | 15,096 | 12,138 | 38% | 32% |
CHEVROLET CAMARO | -1.34% | 7,089 | 7,185 | 18% | 19% |
TOTAL | +5.53% | 39,459 | 37,392 |
Chevy Camaro sales fell 1 percent during the first quarter of 2021. That drop wasn’t as significant as that of the segment-leading Ford Mustang, which fell 4 percent. Nevertheless, the Camaro sits a distant third in the segment by overall sales volume, trailing the Mustang and the Dodge Challenger by double digit margins. In fact, during Q1 2021, Mustang had 39 percent segment share, Dodge Challenger had 34 percent while the Camaro held on to only 16 percent. The two-door mainstream muscle car segment expanded by more than 7 percent this year, meaning that Camaro sales fell faster than the segment average.
GM is expected to discontinue the Camaro at the conclusion of the 2023 model year, and it’s possible that the vehicle will be replaced down the road with an electric version.
The GM Authority Take
The Caliente wheels were affordable and attractive, so it’s disappointing to see them get discontinued. The finish of these wheels looked great with some of the brighter paint options for the Camaro, while also working quite well with black exteriors.
