Sometimes it’s the little things that make for big recalls. Such is the case with the 2012-21 Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickup truck, which is part of a massive new recall by parent automaker Stellantis that includes roughly 446,600 trucks equipped with dual rear wheels and flanged lug nuts. The issue stems from wheel studs and also affects owner’s manuals.

Stellantis said in a statement that routine customer data analysis led to an investigation that discovered certain service and owner’s manuals contain incorrect lug-nut torque instructions. Thus, some trucks may have had their lug nuts overtorqued, which could conceivably compromise studs and lead to wheel separation, increasing the risk of a crash. The automaker also stated there’s no component defect and torque applied during factory assembly is within specification, so the recall condition may only be present in trucks that have been subject to wheel removal as part of a service or upfit procedure. It added that it is unaware of any related accidents or injuries.
Though a remedy is not currently available, dealers are currently in possession of correct service instructions and production vehicles are now being delivered with updated owner’s manuals.
