It could have been a lot worse, quite frankly.

Pat Sajak, the longtime host of "Wheel of Fortune" made a rookie mistake during Thursday's show. During the bonus round, the two-word phrase had six blanks left for the contestant to guess.

"Yikes, well I'd rather be standing here than there, quite frankly," Sajak said before the contestant gave his guess.

"Quite frankly" was the answer to the puzzle, the very phrase Sajak mumbled moments before. During the after show chatter, his right-hand woman Vanna White brought up the slip-up.

"Did you hear what you said?" White asked.

"I did right after I said it. I wonder how many people at home caught it," Sajak said. The people at home might have caught on but the contestant on stage was clueless as he didn't correctly guess the phrase in time.

"It goes to show you that people are concentrating and they're not paying any attention to me," Sajak added.

"Wheel of Fortune" has been Sajak's hosting home since the 1980s and he holds a Guinness World Record for the longest career as host of the same game show. His partner, White, has been at the board for more than 35 years. In 2019, the two celebrated the game show's 7,000th episode.

With all that history, even seasoned game show hosts make mistakes.

"It's funny what your mouth will say that your brain says, 'You shouldn't do that,'" Sajak said of the "quite frankly" flub.

Production for "Wheel of Fortune" was put on hiatus during the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Last June, they re-upped the show with brand new set designs to ensure safety. The famed spinning wheel got an upgrade redesigned to allow more space between contestants, among other COVID-19 safety changes.
