A longtime “Wheel of Fortune” fan from Syracuse will appear on the game show tonight.
Danielle Nagle, a 2007 East Syracuse-Minoa High School graduate, will be a contestant on an episode airing Friday, March 26. She auditioned virtually from her home in Southern California, where she’s expecting her first child with her husband.
“I’ve always been a fan of the show,” Nagle said in a phone interview with syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. “We watch pretty regularly, and I noticed after Covid a lot of the contestants are from California, so I thought this would be best chance to get on. So I auditioned via Zoom.”
Nagle got her undergraduate degree at SUNY Oneonta and her master’s in education at SUNY Oswego, and moved to California when she met her husband on a cruise in Puerto Rico. They’re both big “Harry Potter” fans, and got engaged at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Nagle works as a middle school teacher and a librarian, but does her expertise in language and literature help her solve word puzzles on America’s Game?
“I think so,” Nagle said, though she also credits a family tradition of watching the show after dinner to help her prepare.
“I’ve been watching the show so long that I think I had it (as a video game) on Gameboy.”
Nagle, whose parents and sister still live in the Syracuse area, said she hopes to use any cash winnings towards purchasing a family home.
“We’ve got a new member joining us, so that’ll be a huge help with that,” she said. “Pretty much everyone knows you get $1,000 minimum (for appearing on the show) so that was a day well spent either way.”
Nagle is the second Syracuse native to appear on “Wheel of Fortune” in just over a month. Delvon Worthy, a Henninger High School graduate, won more than $17,000 on a February episode.
“Wheel of Fortune” airs weeknights at 7 p.m. on WSYT (Fox 68) in the Syracuse area.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, fans can audition to be on the show virtually at https://www.wheeloffortune.com/join/be-a-contestant. Worthy said filming also featured Covid-19 precautions like distancing, and a protective covering so contestants wouldn’t all touch the same surfaces on the wheel.
