Back in January, GM Authority was the first to report that all LPO-level (dealer-installed) 22-inch GM wheels are unavailable to order due to constraints in the supply chain. Now, we have further exclusive information to share, this time with a follow-up on the cause of the 22-inch GM wheel shortage.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the hang up has nothing to do with production of the 22-inch GM wheels. In fact, all of the wheels in question have already been shipped over from their respective production facilities in China, and are now sitting in containers in the port of Los Angeles. Now, however, the wheels are still waiting to clear customs, after which they will finally be put into the distribution chain.
“It looks like a skyscraper,” said one source in reference to the number of containers carrying the GM wheels currently sitting at the port of Los Angeles.
General Motors has now started to fly in limited quantities of the 22-inch GM wheels to fill orders. However, this process is limited compared to shipping via container ship, given the restrictions on space and weight for air cargo.
The 22-inch GM wheel shortage is major issue for the automaker, as it prevents any vehicles equipped with the wheels from being ordered and delivered. For example, the highly popular Onyx Package offered with the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is currently unavailable to order as a result of the wheel shortage.
Other vehicles affected by the GM wheel shortage include the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks, as well as the rest of GM’s full-size SUV lineup, including the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, and GMC Yukon.
General Motors is currently working on a solution for the issue. However, a timeframe for when the GM wheel shortage will be fixed has yet to be determined.
