Syracuse native Delvon Worthy has won more than $17,000 on “Wheel of Fortune.”

Worthy, a 34-year-old Henninger High School graduate, appeared as a contestant on Friday night’s episode of the long-running game show. He struggled in the toss-up rounds but got rolling with a food-and-drink clue (”Soft Pretzel From a Street Vendor”), then won a trip to Cancun, Mexico, as he solved another puzzle (”Getting Ready to Leave Town”).

Worthy finished in first place, but was stumped on the final puzzle. The clue was “what are you doing” and the letters were _ _ _ C _ NG AN _ _ _ N _ _ N. (Scroll down to see the answer.)

Worthy missed out the final prize of $38,000, but still took home $17,759 altogether.

He said he hopes to use the prize money towards buying his first home with his wife Elisabeth, a fellow Wake Forest University alum. The couple met years later at a Hillsong Church service in Manhattan and married in 2018; their wedding was featured in The New York Times.

Worthy currently lives in Glendale, California, where he manages partnership efforts for social impact campaigns. He said he’s been a longtime fan of “Wheel of Fortune” and his father, Rev. William Howard Worthy, Jr., watched every night until he passed away.

“My dad would have been excited to know about me being on the show, so this will be a special moment,” Worthy said.

Worthy, whose mother still lives in Syracuse, appeared in a Philadelphia episode as part of the show’s “Great American Cities” week, shot on location in a different city each night with Pat Sajak and Vanna White. Worthy said it was great meeting both longtime stars, and said White helped calm his nerves by reminding him to have fun.

In a phone interview with syracuse.com | The Post-Standard, Worthy said he tried to prepare a game strategy ahead of time but it quickly went out the window because so much of the game relies on the luck of the wheel and how the puzzles go.

Speaking of which, the answer to the final puzzle was “VOICING AN OPINION.”

“Wheel of Fortune” airs weeknights at 7 p.m. on WSYT (Fox 68) in the Syracuse area.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, fans can audition to be on the show virtually at https://www.wheeloffortune.com/join/be-a-contestant. Worthy said filming also featured Covid-19 precautions like distancing, and a protective covering so contestants wouldn’t all touch the same surfaces on the wheel.
