The San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Sierra Club has come out swinging against a spinning icon in Golden Gate Park, with club members saying the 150-foot tall SkyStar Ferris wheel is harmful to wildlife and want it removed.
The wheel—temporarily installed last April to celebrate Golden Gate Park’s 150th birthday—has only operated for 30 days due to COVID-19. Now, the city’s Recreation and Parks Department has proposed extending the lease with its operator for four more years. But not everyone is on board.
Katherine Howard is on the executive committee of the Bay Area chapter of The Sierra Club, and she told KCBS Radio the chapter thinks it “should be removed from Golden Gate Park.”
She said the bright, pulsating and rotating LED lights on the wheel can harm wildlife.
“Wildlife needs darkness,” Howard said.
But Tamara Barak Aparton with the Recreation and Park Department said it cares deeply about the environment and that the lights are no different than other large, illuminated structures in the park.
“There is a thousand more acres of the park, which remain completely undisturbed where people can enjoy nature without many other people there,” Aparton said. “And frankly, this all seems code for ‘not in my backyard.’”
