In the world of racing, there are different levels of powerful, with many being associated with Chevrolet engines. However, there are some platforms that can build staggering levels of power in platforms like the Impala, Camaro, and Corvette after a swap or using the original motors. Team NC3, however decided to build a massively powerful Chevy Nova to the tune of 4,039 horsepower through a purpose-built drag racing engine. The team over with FuelTech USA went in-depth with the monster Nova build.
Purpose-Built
The drag car has been built from the ground up to be a drag car, even under the rear half of the original Chevy Nova shell. The front end has not been refitted yet onto the body, but as a result the overbuilt engine can be seen in all its glory. Up front, the massive twin turbochargers take up a good portion of the nose of the car, running exhaust straight back from them out in front of the doors. Fitted on it's drag setup of skinny tires in front and bolted to a dynamometer in the rear, the Nova looks insanely aggressive from every angle.
The Engine
The engine is a ProLine Racing 481X block, fitted with two 98mm twin turbos runs on a FT600 ECU to put the power out to the rear wheels. A very new build for NC3, the car also uses an Alcohol O2 dual channel conditioner from FuelTech which allows the car to read extremely rich air/fuel ratios to put out insane power levels. According to FuelTech, "features include integrated Boost Controller, PRO-Nitrous Controller, sequential injection and ignition, Traction Control, Delay Box, O2 Closed Loop, and Data Acquisition."
Performance Figures
At the start of the day, NC3 had told FuelTech USA that they were going to aim for around 4,000 horsepower for their drag Nova. According to FuelTech, "Ubert’s Nova relies on a FuelTech FTSPARK-8 Gen I ignition system, which provides 600 mj of energy" as the only way to generate the full 4,000 horsepower at the wheel.
During the first test, the car was able to achieve 2,000 horsepower at 4,500 rpm and 3,259 horsepower at 7,632 rpm. On the final and full-throttle test, the car was able to hit 4,039 horsepower at 8,062 rpm. Running with that horsepower, the Nova is in theory able to run a quarter mile in under 6 seconds.
