A wanted Lockport man grabbed the steering wheel of the car his child's mother was driving, causing it to run off the road and crash while a baby was riding in the back, police said.
Shortly before 7 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a crash on Jefferson Street between Barney and Caterpillar drives, police said.
A car had run off the road and crashed into an unoccupied vehicle parked in a business lot, police said.
The officers determined the driver of the vehicle, a 27-year-old woman, was arguing with front-seat passenger Richard Garcia, who is the father of her child, police said.
During the argument, police said, Garcia grabbed the steering wheel and "intentionally veered the vehicle to the left, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway, striking an unoccupied parked vehicle in a nearby business parking lot."
A 1-year-old child was riding in the back at the time, police said.
While speaking with officers, Garcia happened to mention he had "multiple warrants for his arrest," according to police, and then took off running.
"Officers checking the area located Garcia hiding between vehicles in a nearby parking lot and placed him into custody without incident," police said. "The driver and child were uninjured in the crash."
Garcia was arrested on probable cause of endangering the life or health of a child, criminal damage to property, reckless conduct and obstructing a peace officer. He was taken to the Will County jail and was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon for a bond hearing.
The bond for Garcia's unrelated arrest warrants totaled $125,000, records show.
