Clay, N.Y. — An SUV rolled over and sheared a utility pole in half after the driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed near North Syracuse Sunday afternoon.
The driver of the silver Honda CR-V was heading west on West Taft Road around 1:55 p.m. when he fell asleep, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jon Seeber said. The driver then crossed into the eastbound lanes and went off the road, striking a utility pole near the intersection of Fay Park Drive.
The driver, 40-year-old Joseph Raiti, of Syracuse, was not injured. Raiti was ticketed for third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and failure to keep right.
The SUV rolled over with its driver’s side resting against the ground. Broken glass and other debris surrounded the vehicle.
The top half of the sheared-off pole is still standing, supported by the utility lines. The bottom half of the pole is broken off and lying in the middle of the intersection.
The utility lines were cable and phone only, Seeber said. No power outages have been reported.
