A producer of aftermarket wheels and performance tires recently announced its acquisition of a shuttered wheel plant in Alabama.
Wheel Pros plans to convert the former Borbet Manufacturing Facility in Auburn — which closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic this spring — from an OEM automotive supplier to an aftermarket wheel production facility.
The company, which says it is the only aftermarket cast wheel manufacturer in the U.S., expects to begin cast wheel production in Auburn "within a few months." Wheel Pros expects to produce some 1.5 million wheels per year between Auburn and its current facility in York, South Carolina.
The expansion is expected to create more than 300 full-time jobs.
"This investment secures our position as a leader in our industry and provides us with full control of the entire manufacturing process," Wheel Pros CEO and co-founder Randy White said in the announcement.
Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
Wheel Pros says its global network includes more than 10,000 retailers with distribution centers in North America and Australia. The company initially invested in U.S. manufacturing by acquiring the York facility in 2018. The company currently employs more than 250 workers in South Carolina.
