The three truck occupants were taken to hospital for minor injuries like “lots of cuts and scrapes, lots of glass, metal cuts,” said Schmidt.
“I don’t know if there were any broken bones. They were checking into that but I never got any confirmation,” Schmidt added.
The bottom line is that people need to make sure their vehicle wheels are firmly attached or as the OPP Highway Safety Division said in a tweet hashtag about the accident, #Checkyournuts.
“It happens more than you think,” said Schmidt. “We get about 150 calls about this every year in the GTA alone and about two-thirds of (the wheels) come off a passenger vehicle. And about one-third come off a transport truck. So it’s more prevalent in passenger cars and we also see a spike when people are changing their tires from winters to summers or when someone has taken their tires off for a brake job or new tires.”
Schmidt said charges were pending for the driver of the other vehicle but had yet to be laid and he couldn’t say what they would be.
