The details of the auto accident which claimed the life of Andrew Clyde Scott of San Francisco and injured James Benson, manager of the Cone ranch to such an extent that he is unable to leave his home today, were disclosed last night when local people went to the scene after receiving the flash here about 5 o’clock telling of the accident

The accident happened eight miles south of Corning on the state highway. A crew repairing the highway had protected fresh concrete by laying boards across the pavement. The traveling public has been forced to make a detour around the boards.

Benson was driving down the hill approaching the piece of bad road at a moderate rate of speed, according to other motorists who were on the road at the time. He turned around the row of boards and as he started to come back on the pavement his left rear wheel caved in, the car turning completely over and landing right side up on top of the barb wire fence. Neither Benson or Scott were thrown from the machine, both being in a natural sitting position in the front seat of the car when it stopped.

P. A. Hunter was only a few seconds behind Benson, probably a mile or so. Hunter and some tourists rushed to the car and raised the broken top from the men. Benson was conscious but dazed. Scott was sitting in the car, his head drooped back over the seat j with his neck broken. Death had resulted instantly. The post mortem examination disclosed that four ribs and the left collar bone were broken and a mark across Scott’s chest showed that same part of the car pinned him for the instant the car rolled over.

It is presumed that Scott being a big man was caught by the door or back of the seat when the car rolled over, while Benson luckily escaped owing to his being small and was saved by having enough room to be under the steering wheel and the sides of the car held the heavy machine from his body.

Benson was taken to Corning and after receiving medical attention was able to return to the scene of the accident and arrange for disposition of his car and property.

Andrew C. Scott was well known in this city, having visited his friends here and also transacted business in this city on numerous occasions. He was a federal tax advisor and has done considerable work in this section for ranchers and financiers in making out income tax reports.

He was coming to Red Bluff for the purpose of taking a hunting trip into the Modoc section at the Cone ranch summer range.

He was a widower. His wife died in San Francisco two years ago from the flu, Scott himself having a narrow escape from the same disease.
