‘Austin City Limits’ Airs 50-year Asleep at the Wheel Retrospective Tonight - American Songwriter

wheel.indah.link

By Lynne Margolis

It would be impossible to count how many times western-swing band Asleep at the Wheel has covered Route 66 — both the road and the song — in its 50-year existence.

The Austin-based band, still led by co-founder Ray Benson, has carried its lively hybrid of jazz, blues, country and choo-choo ch’boogie to dancehalls, theaters and festivals from Oklahoma City to Amarillo — and Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino and plenty of other places in the world — helping generations of fans get their kicks to its fiddle-driven sound (and that trademark song). And tonight, Austin City Limits is celebrating the band’s anniversary with ACL Presents: 50 Years of Asleep at the Wheel, a retrospective of the band’s five decades as seen in performances culled from ACL’s archives. The PBS show airs at 8 p.m. CT/9 p.m. ET.

Since forming the band in Paw Paw, West Virginia, with former members Lucky Oceans and Leroy Preston, Benson has kept Asleep at the Wheel’s engine humming on more than two dozen albums, including several tributes to his inspiration, Bob Wills, and Wills’ Lone Star-born, Tulsa-fed Texas Playboys.

Along the way, the band has amassed an orchestra’s worth of alumni and 10 Grammys, not to mention a spot in TV history for performing on the first nationally televised episode of Austin City Limits in 1976. Including their 2015 induction into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame, the band has appeared 12 times on the iconic PBS show, now the longest-running music series in TV history.

Like a cultural time capsule, the hour-long show captures the 6-foot-7 Benson and his large band in their element in clips from four decades, including their 2009 appearance with Willie Nelson after releasing their Willie and the Wheel album.

“The great thing about as many times as the Wheel has been on, every show they’ve ever done Is different,” says ACL producer Terry Lickona. “They don’t keep coming back and doing the same Bob Wills classics that they’ve always done; they always mix it up, either with special guests or some sort of special twist that they hadn’t done before.”

Those guests also include Lyle Lovett, Vince Gill, the Avett Brothers and Johnny Gimble, along with a parade of some of the area’s finest musicians who have performed as members of Asleep at the Wheel, seen in segments edited together by Benson’s son Aaron, who coproduced the special with his brother, Sam.

As much as Austin and Austin City Limits have evolved over the years, says Lickona, “We keep coming back to Asleep at the Wheel. They’re sort of a mainstay or linchpin for the show, down through the years and the decades. It’s great to have that continuity and that connection.”

He regards the 2009 Willie and Wheel performance of “Hesitation Blues” as a highlight.

“Everybody was inspired,” Lickona says. “There was something about the show that night with Asleep at the Wheel as his band, in effect, that just seemed to really bring out the best in Willie — and likewise, Asleep at the Wheel.”

The program is among several special events Benson has planned for the anniversary, including an early 2021 release of a new album, Halfway to a Hundred Years. The title song was inspired by singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson’s response after Benson mentioned the 50th anniversary was coming up.

Benson, who once served on the show’s board of directors, says the COVID-19-induced break from touring has allowed him to concentrate even more on songwriting. (That is, once he recovered from his own mild case of the virus.)

“On the road, you’re just trying to get fed, sleep, showered, ready for the gig. Boom. Get on the bus, go. And the ideas go by,” he says. Now he can write whenever he wants, then step into his studio and cut demos.

“It’s been a lifetime of learning … so I’m not just writing one-four-five blues; it took a lifetime of practicing to become a songwriter so I can write in all different genres,” Benson notes. “It’s the same thing developing singing too, so that I can tackle stuff that I want to do.”

As for how a Jewish kid from Philadelphia has managed to carry the torch for western swing for five decades, Benson says, “It’s pretty simple. Don’t quit.

“I always tell people, if you’re in it for the money or the fame, you’re going to be disappointed. But if you’re in it for the experience, you’ll never quit, and you’ll enjoy it.”

2022 Cadillac V-Series Blackwings to Get Magnesium Wheels - Car and Driver

wheel.indah.link
  • Cadillac has revealed that it will offer magnesium wheels on its upcoming Blackwing sports sedans.
  • The V-series Blackwing models are higher-performance versions of the CT4-V and CT5-V.
  • These new variants will go on sale in the summer of 2021.

Magnesium wheels have been used for decades in professional auto racing, prized for their light weight. Cadillac claims that magnesium has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any commonly available metal. But magnesium wheels are virtually unheard of in current production vehicles, though Chevrolet offered them as an expensive option on some fifth-generation (C5) Corvettes. Now Cadillac is bringing true mag wheels to the street as an option on its 2022 CT4-V and CT5-V Blackwing high-performance models.

From the teaser photo GM released, its new mag wheel won't look very different from the hundreds of aluminum alloy wheel designs currently spinning around on today's vehicles. Its one distinguishing feature is a small "Mg" logo stamped into the wheel rim, the symbol for the element magnesium.

Cadillac says that the new forged mag wheels will reduce unsprung weight—we assume this means in comparison to the car's standard aluminum alloy wheels—though the company hasn’t revealed by how much. Cadillac also claims that the lighter wheels and will improve ride-and-handling. They could improve acceleration as well. The laws of physics agree, but it will take driving and testing the mag-equipped cars back-to-back with those on the standard wheels to see exactly how much the dynamics actually improve.

Asked why it chose magnesium wheels rather than carbon-fiber rims like those Ford fitted to the Mustang GT350R, Cadillac responded that "magnesium wheels help reduce mass at the center, allowing for more flexibility with the spoke design and better shock/vibration absorbance. In our testing, magnesium alloy wheels produced a better ride quality due to its vibration dampening."

This actually isn't the first time parent company General Motors has offered true magnesium wheels on one of its production cars. Chevrolet sold magnesium wheels for several years as an option for the fifth-generation (C5) Corvette but apparently dropped the expensive and rarely purchased item in 2001.

"Nice mags!" is a phrase you heard often in enthusiast circles if you were around in the 1960s. (Of course you heard it, Ceppos. You were there!—Ed.) It referred to "mag wheels," a term derived from the exotic-looking, lightweight magnesium wheels prevalent on post-war racing cars. But it was actually a misnomer; magnesium wheels were virtually never installed on production cars back then; they were expensive, prone to corrosion, and thought to be too fragile to handle the hard impacts and bad weather encountered in street use.

Many of the muscle cars prevalent in the sixties were equipped with stylized, stamped-steel wheels that were often chromed and painted. For reasons lost long ago, they were dubbed "mags." There is one type of car, however, on which magnesium wheels have found wide use: the hot rod. Rodders long ago appropriated magnesium wheels from race cars—Halibrand-style mags used on old sprint cars and Indy roadsters from the fifties and sixties have been long-time favorites—for their cool appearance as well as their light weight. Today, many of those original designs are recreated in aluminum.

We'll have to wait until these new Cadillacs are revealed, likely in spring 2021, before we know if "nice mags!" is a phrase we'll be hearing once again.

2022 Cadillac CT4 And CT5 Blackwing Will Offer Magnesium Wheels - CarScoops

wheel.indah.link

Magnesium wheels used to be the bee’s knees, but they’ve declined in popularity as automakers have embraced cheaper aluminum wheels and more exotic carbon fiber ones.

That being said, magnesium wheels are still around and will be used on the 2022 Cadillac CT4 and CT5 Blackwing. In fact, they’ll be the only GM products to offer them in the “near future.”

Cadillac didn’t say much about the wheels, but noted the forged magnesium alloys draw inspiration from the DPi-V.R race car and will be optional on the upcoming performance models. The company went on to say they’ll reduce unsprung weight, improve ride and handling characteristics, and enhance the overall driving experience.

Driven: 2020 Cadillac CT4-V Takes The Fight To BMW M235i Gran Coupe and Mercedes-AMG A 35

Besides touting their benefits, Cadillac released a teaser image which shows a bronze-colored wheel with an “Mg” logo. Those familiar with the periodic table will know that stands for magnesium.

While the teaser image only shows a glimpse of the wheels, they’ve been spotted on previous prototypes. Those same images revealed the models will adopt a more aggressive front fascia, front fender vents and a more pronounced rear spoiler.

Cadillac has already teased the interior and confirmed the Blackwings will have a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel with carbon fiber accents and a red center stripe. The company has also announced the CT5 Blackwing will offer carbon fiber front seats with a laser-etched V-Series logo on the back of the headrest.

Cadillac has been tight-lipped on performance specifications, but the CT4 Blackwing is expected to have an upgraded version of the twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 that powered the ATS-V. If this rumor pans out, the model could have more than 464 hp (346 kW / 470 PS) and 445 lb-ft (603 Nm) of torque.

The larger CT5 Blackwing is expected to be powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that produces around 650 hp (485 kW / 659 PS) and 650 lb-ft (880 Nm) of torque. Cadillac has hinted this could enable the car to hit a top speed of 200 mph (322 km/h).

Regardless of what’s under the hood, Cadillac has already confirmed the models will be offered with a manual transmission. At the time, the company said the cars would have a stick due to the “strong desire” from driving enthusiasts.

Cadillac hasn’t said when the models will be unveiled, but a launch is scheduled for the summer of 2021.

The Wheel of Time set photos hint at events of final two episodes - Winter is Coming

wheel.indah.link

The Wheel of Time fans will find a lot to love in photos from the set of Amazon’s new adaptation, with characters like Rand and Egwene brought to life onscreen for the first time.

After a coronavirus-mandated halt in filming, Amazon is back shooting the final two episodes of its adaptation of Robert Jordan’s epic The Wheel of Time series.

Well, the final two episodes of the first season, that is; The Wheel of Time is 14 books long, so if season 1 is a hit, it’ll take a while to get through it all. In any case, a number of photos have been leaking from set and giving fans a glimpse into what’s coming. The leaks may help us answer the pesky question of just how much of Jordan’s series will be adapted in the first season?

Most of the photos coming out appear to be from the set of Fal Dara, a walled city our heroes visit towards the eye of the first novel, The Eye of the World, although they spend time there at the start of the second, The Great Hunt, as well.

Fal Dara is located in the far north, near the Blight, an encroaching disease upon the land. There, the company meets the Lord of Fal Dara, Agelmar Jagad, a character who (so far as we know) has yet to be cast. It looks like the production may use the town of TerezĂn, Czech Republic to stand in for the city:

The banner in the picture above appears to be from Shienar, one of the four Borderlands nations. That’s the region where Fal Dara is located.

Another photo shows a banner with three running foxes. Fans recognized it as Lord Agelmar’s banner:

Next, we have set photos featuring Josha Stradowski (Rand al’Thor) and Madeleine Madden (Egwene al’Vere). Interesting items include a bow that looks too small to be from the Two Rivers, a chest large enough to fit a human body, and a Trolloc skull on a target dummy.

Rumor has it that filming could go on until mid-December. That’s well over a month and likely time saved for the final episode. Could filming have wrapped on the seventh episode, where all the leaks are coming from? Unless they are shooting the season out of order, Fal Dara remains to be the location for episode 7 and maybe 8.

So what does this mean for how much of the book will be adapted in the first season, which consists of eight episodes? The first Wheel of Time book ends at the Eye of the World, a pool of magical energy where our heroes battle members of the villainous Forsaken. Episode 7 could pick up after the battle at the Eye and start digging into material from The Great Hunt, which sees the party return to Fal Dara with the Horn of Valere and introduces Siuan Sance, the Amyrlin Seat of the White Tower, before Trollocs attack. The season could end on the beginnings of the hunt for the horn and journey to Tar Valon.

Another possibility is that Episode 7 will end with the battle at the Eye, and then Egwene, Rand, and company will return to Fal Dara for Episode 8. Perhaps the final scene of the season could be Rand’s audience with the Amyrlin Seat, where she reveals to him how important he is to the turning of the wheel of time.

Game of Thrones regularly had its big climax in the penultimate episode of the season; maybe The Wheel of Time could follow suit?

No matter what happens, the set photos are pretty incredible, especially if you’ve been waiting for this story to come to life onscreen for a long time.

Killer Car Movies: “The Car: Road to Revenge”... - The News Wheel

The Car: Road to Revenge
Imagine this, but killing people in a cyberpunk city of the future
Photo: Pixabay via CC

This Halloween, the usual scary movie monsters are taking a back seat to a cavalcade of creepy cars. Throughout October, The News Wheel has celebrated the best of killer-car cinema. From the scary and eerie to the silly and mind-boggling, we’ve highlighted a wide variety of horror films in which vehicles strike back against their drivers. As the Halloween season wraps up, it’s time to take a look at one more movie. Interestingly, our last killer car flick is a sequel to one we’ve already discussed. Prepare yourselves to enter the baffling world of The Car: Road to Revenge.

The Convenience of the Multi-Flex Tailgate: Scaring its way to the 2021 Silverado

The story of “The Car: Road to Revenge”

Remember The Car from 1977? Well, guess what: more than 40 years after its release, it now has a sequel. How’s that for unexpected?

The original The Car was a fun and eerie little 70s flick about a driverless vehicle offing people like a slasher villain. The film never definitively solves the mystery of what’s powering the car, but hints at it being demonic, possibly satanic. The film ends with the destruction of the titular vehicle, and victory for the human heroes. It seemed pretty definitive. But as any horror fan knows, no movie monster stays dead for long.

A whopping four decades later, in 2019, a sequel suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Despite being called a “sequel” by the production team, The Car: Road to Revenge is about as far removed from the original as possible. So far removed, in fact, that it doesn’t even feel like it takes place on the same plane of existence. The film tells the bizarre tale of unrest in a stylized cyberpunk city of the future. A corrupt DA is murdered, and his body is tossed out a window where it crashes into his new car. Soon after, the car returns and begins — you guessed it — killing people. The car is purported to contain the soul of the murdered villain, now fused with his snazzy ride. But is that really true, or is something less supernatural going on…

Why it’s not scary

Yeah, you read that right. Despite having some brutal moments and a few tense scenes, the car on the road to revenge in The Car: Road to Revenge is simply not scary. Intimidating in an over-the-top action movie kind of way, perhaps, but not frightening in the least. Much of that can be blamed on this film’s agenda; it’s not a horror film, but a cyberpunk action/adventure. It’s completely out of tune with the original, particularly when it comes to the big reveal regarding the killer vehicle of the title. The car itself — and yes, this is a major spoiler — turns out to not be supernatural at all, but rather an AI-driven killing machine.

Unnecessary but fun

All of this begs a very reasonable and simple question: why? Why make a sequel to a cult classic horror movie 42 years later, and then make it so different from the original? Were they hoping to attract some kind of fan base for the 1977 film and cash in on the name? Would it really have been such a big deal to just make the film its own thing, rather than tethering it to a movie with little notoriety outside of a cult following?

While the circumstances behind its production are baffling, the film is still watchable. It’s a bit of a mess, but it’s never boring. Despite being incongruous with the film it’s supposedly following up on, the cyberpunk aesthetic is eye-catching and fun. The action is quick, the directing is competent, and it even features a few homages to the original film. If any of this sounds like a good time, give The Car: Road to Revenge a try. As of this writing, it’s streaming on Netflix.

Towing Prowess to Die For: The Chevy Silverado and Colorado

This concludes The News Wheel’s month-long celebration of killer car movies. However, before you go, I wanted to leave you with this final word. We hope the memories of killer bulldozers, haunted hearses, and terrifying trucks won’t give you bad dreams, so here’s a word of reassurance before you click away.

When you get home tonight, and the lights have been turned out, and you are afraid to look in the garage — dreading that you might see a fearsome grille and crushing tires appear behind the rising door… why, just pull yourself together and remember that, after all… THERE ARE SUCH THINGS!

Happy Halloween! (And if you got the above reference, you’re my kind of horror fan.)

As this world takes to bicycling again (the pandemic has seen a surge in bicycle-use), the guys at Beno Inc want to finally get e-bikes right. Meet Reevo, an e-bike that ushers in the future of bicycling, with a sleek design, hubless wheels, built-in GPS, and a biometric sensor for antitheft!

Made to practically be the Tesla of bicycles, the Reevo approaches design, engineering, materials, and performance with a completely fresh set of eyes. Designed to be hollow on the inside, the patent-pending wheels put Reevo in a visual class of its own, giving it a silhouette that’s both futuristic and memorable. We’ll get back to the un-ignorable aesthetic beauty of the Reevo, but let’s just dive into its performance and features for a bit.

Reevo can be used as a traditional bicycle, a pedal-assisted e-bike, or a fully electric bicycle powered entirely by the throttle. The US model comes with a 750W motor that allows it to have the 100% throttle feature and a top speed of 25mph. The EU model, however, comes with a 250W motor that assists while you pedal, giving you a boost of speed as much as 25 km/h. The Adaptive Pedal Assist function kicks in when the Reevo detects an incline or riding. Both bike models come with a 48V, 10.5Ah detachable battery that sits within the bike’s sleek frame. Designed to be removable, the battery can easily be popped out when it needs charging, or when you lock the bike, preventing anyone from driving off with it… and that’s just one of the safety features integrated into the Reevo.

The bike’s handlebar even sports a biometric locking feature, which deploys powerful electronic wheel-lock mechanisms that lie hidden within the Reevo’s design, out of reach from bolt-cutters. A motion-detecting microchip lies within the Reevo’s frame too, allowing it to alert you if anyone tries to move it… and a built-in GPS module lets you track the Reevo’s whereabouts from your phone anytime, anywhere. In fact, your smartphone plays an integral role in operating the bike too, serving as its dashboard during the ride. The e-bike comes with a cradle for your phone, allowing you to secure your device in place and use your own map application to navigate. Alternatively, Reevo’s app gives you navigation as well as stats like your speed and e-bike battery level. It also serves as a bridge for future OTA updates for your e-bike.

Reevo’s state-of-the-art engineering and hardware play a strong part in its futuristic appeal, but its sleek, almost Tron-like aesthetic just helps drive the point home better! The bike’s hubless wheels are a work of art in their own right, but where things get interesting is when you notice that the sleek wheels even integrate headlamps and taillights into them. These switch on automatically, thanks to an ambient light-sensor within the e-bike. The headlamps, located strategically on the front wheel, help illuminate the road ahead, while the taillights flashes when you brake, and serve as indicators when you turn. However, if you thought those hubless wheels were appropriately audacious, the Reevo even comes with a carry-bag that fits right into the hollow center of the rear-wheel! A clever alternative to the amateurish baskets that you see on the front of some bicycles, this bag sits perfectly in the negative space of the rear-wheel. It’s features like these, and the sleek headlamps and taillights that really set the Reevo apart, reinforcing exactly why I call it the Tesla of bicycles. A combination of futuristic design and engineering, the Reevo was built to be the natural evolution of biking as the human race finally begins picking up the mode of transportation again. Each Reevo e-bike even comes with a 1-year warranty that covers any material and workmanship, so you know that you’re getting yourself a two-wheeler that’s both futuristic and reliable!
